Research
Current research include:
- the study of the environmental impacts of multi-national corporations on sustainable livelihoods of rural women in Akwa-Ibom state, Niger-Delta region, Nigeria; commencing October 2001 and duration 2 years; sponsored by Third World Network Africa Gender and Economic Reforms in Africa (GERA) programme; and
- an open-ended documentation of indigenous environmental and natural resources management practices in Nigeria, involving the entire NEST membership.
Capacity Development
In collaboration with Global Change Strategies International, funded by CIDA, NEST is currently engaged in a project to improve Nigeria's capacity to respond to climate change. The project titled Canada-Nigeria Climate Change Capacity Development Project will undertake activities to strengthen the capacities of Federal Institutions, raise awareness in targeted segments of the public, improve the information base on greenhouse gas emissions and mitigation options, and undertake an analysis of the country's vulnerability to climate change. Planning for the project took just over one year and the duration is two years.
Community Service
NEST continues to provide service to the global community by serving in key implementation planning and monitoring committees of the Desertification Convention. Locally. similar service is provided through contributions to national committees of the Federal Ministry of Environment. |
