SITES AND VOICES FROM DAUDU |
Daudu community in Guma Local Government area of Benue State is leaving nothing to chance as they unite to adapt to climate change. The community, with the assistance of Greenwatch initiative, has started the establishment of a small nursery of fast growing drought tolerant citrus trees which will later be distributed to beneficiaries and transplanted in their fields during the rainy season.
The work has also started on the rehabilitation of an uncompleted dam in the community which will serve as a water source for irrigation for dry season farming as well as a source of drinking water. The community has been trained in these two areas (dry season farming and tree seedling production)
Hear what Mrs. Patricia Odah, a housewife in Tse-Ityondan community of Daudu has to say "'mgem u gbo aondo' (which means climate change in Tiv language) is real. Now the heat is much and our crops are drying up on the farm; we now have poor crop yield, we use to harvest three (3) bags of melon from an acre of land in those days but now we hardly get a quarter of a bag from the same area of land".
This revelation came to the limelight as BNRCC monitoring team visited the community recently in early February.
