HOW NIGERIA’S CLIMATE OUTLOOK IS INDUCING EXTREME RAINFALL
The cost in future of the emerging climate scenario for Lagos is too expensive to wait. As the loss for Nigeria is projected to be between 2 per cent and 11 per cent of Nigeria’s GDP by 2020, rising to between 6 per cent and 30 per cent by the year 2050. In naira terms this loss is equivalent to between N15 trillion and N69 trillion, writes Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba. He says that bolder urban renewal; redesign and re-conceptualisation will take Lagos out of its recent quagmire.

Communiqué of the NASPA Validation Workshop

BNRCC PILOT PROJECTS HOST REGIONAL KNOWLEDGE SHARING WORKSHOPS
To begin the new year with an emphasis on communications between government, local communities and civil society organizations, one of NEST’s project -Building Nigeria’s Response to Climate Change project (BNRCC) held Knowledge Sharing Workshops – one in Makurdi, Benue State, on January 18th, and one in Calabar, Cross River State, on January 20th, 2011.

As part of the process of gender mainstreaming,a project of NEST 'Building Nigeria's Response to Climate Change' (BNRCC) developed a draft Gender and Climate Change toolkit. The toolkit is meant to act as a guide for users to providing suggestions, strategies, and methodology to ensure that gender mainstreaming is an integral part of the overall Project Implementation Plan (PIP).

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS (RFP) FOR STRATEGY ON CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION, KNOWLEDGE AND TOOLS FOR LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA
BACKGROUND Located in Nigeria’s western coastal region, Lagos State, dominated by the mega-city of Lagos, is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, particularly in the areas of human settlement, agriculture, land use, water resources, health, energy, coastal resources, transport, commerce and industry that affect the livelihoods of the majority of the people. Unless sufficient attention is paid to the impacts of climate change, and to building adaptive strategies, resilience and coping mechanisms, the vulnerability of Lagos State, the economic hub of Nigeria and also West Africa, will jeopardize the long- term development of the country towards reducing poverty and reaching economic sufficiency consistent with VISION 20: 2020 and the MDG policies and programmes.

"Our mangroves that provide protection from wind and rain storms causing our fishes to produce well and which act as buffers to erosion are being destroyed rapidly. Now we cannot predict our seasons anymore and this has led to poor crop yields. We attribute all these to 'Iphen obhina'."

"Before now, our rainy season started in March but now the rain comes in May or early June. In the 70s, we used to plant our guinea corn 'yar falgore' in April and harvest it in October, now we are not planting that species again. We now plant 'kaura' which matures in four months and also engage in mixed farming because the rainy season has reduced"

Daudu community in Guma Local Government area of Benue State is leaving nothing to chance as they unite to adapt to climate change. The community, with the assistance of Greenwatch initiative, has started the establishment of a small nursery of fast growing drought tolerant citrus trees which will later be distributed to beneficiaries and transplanted in their fields during the rainy season.
